For those visiting Mexico for the first time, here’s a quick guide to help you navigate where to go.
When you arrive at the airport, the process is pretty straightforward. Just follow the signs and flow of the crowd toward baggage claim and the exit.
Once you get close to the exit, you’ll see the duty free section and then tourist companies. This is the first group you will ignore!
(All these companies pay premium to sell at the airport so they can charge high prices to tourists.)
You will then see a row of people by the exit doors. They are taxi companies and very expensive. This is the second group you ignore. Just walk through the doors to your left.
Almost there! Keep going straight after you exit the doors (and ignore these people too).
You should be walking up to the end where there are taxis and people with signs. This sign is the one you will be looking out for.
Tell the driver your names and what hotel you are staying at and jump on board!
You driver will make a stop at a local grocery store to buy forgotten items, snacks, and to take out pesos. Conversion rate is about 20 pesos to 1 dollar.
Pesos are greatly preferred for use as tips and for shopping with local vendors.
Also make sure to only buy reef safe SPF!
